Dia de los Ninos : Day of the Child

Riverside County Library to Celebrate Día de los Niños/
Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book)

2009 Celebrations

Throughout the month of April, Riverside County Library System will present its fifth annual celebration of Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros (Day of the Child / Day of the Book), a series of special events honoring books, libraries, and reading for children. This year, many of Riverside County Library System’s 33 branches will offer a variety of programming for children and adults, including author appearances, bilingual story times, crafts, games, and music. (See attached list of participating libraries and activities.)

Pat Mora, founder of the Día de Los Niños/ Día de los Libros , Children’s Day / Book Day, nationwide, is an award-winning poet, and author of more than 25 books for children as well as adults. Come hear Pat Mora read from her work and share bookjoy at the Thousand Palms and Mecca libraries on April 19, and the Home Gardens and Vick Knight libraries on April 20. Her recent work, Let’s Eat / ¡A comer!, Yum! ¡MmMm! ¡Qué rico! joins Mora’s long list of publications, including her classic story, Tomás and the Library Lady.

Internationally acclaimed folksinger and storyteller Suni Paz will be presenting songs and folktales at César E. Chavez Perris Library on Tuesday, April 15. Winner of The Children's Music Network‘s Magic Penny Award for her outstanding lifetime contribution to children's music, Suni Paz is a pioneering writer and singer of songs in Spanish for children. A Smithsonian Folkways recording artist and author of books for children and adults, Paz will sing and share stories from Latin America with children and their families.

On Wednesday, April 30, award-winning author, storyteller, and children’s librarian Lucía M. González will entertain children and adults at Glen Avon Regional and Woodcrest Community libraries in the Riverside area. Born in Havana, Cuba, González is fascinated by foktales of Cuba, California, Spain, Venezuela, and Florida, and is best-known for her illustrated books The Bossy Gallito and Señor Cat’s Romance and Other Favorite Stories from Latin America. Her new book, The Storyteller’s Candle: La velita de los cuentos, has just been released. In addition to her 2 public library events, González will also do a program with children at Nuview Elementary School in Nuevo on the morning of April 30.

A wide variety of other Día de los Niños/ Día de los Libros events will be held at libraries across the county. These programs will include bilingual story hours, poetry programs, storytelling, crafts, and cultural programs. To highlight just a few of these:

            · At Robidoux Library in Riverside on Thursday afternoon, April 17, and at Grace Mellman Library in Temecula on Tuesday afternoon, April 29, Eduardo Parra and Mindy Donner of Spinning Wheel Players take the audience on a story journey to Nicaragua, with the whimsical folktale, El Sombrero del Tío Nacho / Uncle Nacho’s Hat. They invite audience participation to create an “orchestra” with their collection of 50 ethnic rhythm instruments and they welcome a few actors to help them up “on stage”.
            · At Thousand Palms Library , in addition to featured author Pat Mora at noon, there will be a whole day of literacy and activities for the entire family. Be one of the first 50 families to receive a free book by Pat Mora. Enjoy storytelling, crafts, games, face-painting, Paws-to-Read with an animal therapy dog, read-aloud hour, refreshments and prizes.
            · Valle Vista Library in Hemet is offering a series of events throughout the month of April: April 2 – Craft (tissue paper flowers and hanging flags), April 9 – Mariachi Magic, April 22 – Bilingual Story Times, April 14 – 18 – Display of your own poems, April 30 – Bilingual Story Time and refreshments.

These and many other programs are included in the complete listing of programs that accompanies this release.

La Quinta
Our Dia program will be from 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m on April 12th in the Children's' Area. We waited so long to book a performer that I just went with someone smaller and more local. It is a reptile program rather than someone/something Latino. I will be giving out bilingual books, lots of book related crafts, the fairytale challenge, and if I can get volunteers a reader's theater snake story from Mexico.

San Jacinto
We plan to celebrate the Day of the Book and Day of the child on the 24th of April. It is also on the same day we will have our second month of RIF. Our "Dia" Program will start at 4:00 by an opening number coming from the Mariachi Band of the San Jacinto High School. They will play two Hispanic Songs and One English. This will give ample time for the late coming visitors to find parking. We will provide a book display for the author where he can do book signing. A display of the author's works will be set in the library starting April first until the 24th on the day of the event. There will raffle draws for participants and three games where we will be distributing candies to the players. The games is the concluding part of the event.

Mr. Carlos Q. Rivera-Vasquez is also willing to do the Hispanic translation of our RIF Program. We have 132 pupils coming in that day that are divided into four classes. Two classes are scheduled in the morning 9:30 to 10:30 and two classes are scheduled in the afternoon 1:30-2:30.

Our "Dia" Program will be reading in Spanish and English. Linda Burnham will do reading in English and the author will translate in Spanish. The book to be read during the program will be the author's work entitled, "The Little Timid Crystal Frog". He will do book signing also for his works. Since the author will be in the library for the whole day of the 24th to render a free service to the community I decided to bring him to lunch instead of him going home.

I would like to request a certificate with the Dia Logo and LSSI Logo with the signature of Mark Smith and Nancy Johnson to be awarded to him after the program and an honorarium of $100.00. for his whole hearted participation in the "Dia Los ninos and Dia Los Libros event".

I am sending the author's information by currier since the fax copies are not readable. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

Desert Hot Springs
We have two Day of the Young Child/ Dia de los Niños events happening in April. The first will be the Desert hot Springs Day of the Young Child event which is held annually in the K-Mart shopping center in town. We’ll have a table of library information and an activity for the children and I’ll have a bilingual staff member there with me. This happens on Saturday, April 12th from 9:00 to 2:00.

On Saturday, April 26th we’ll have a Dia de los Niños event at the library. We’ll have a bilingual story time. (Sandra Garcia will be her to help me with this. Then we’ll have a related craft activity following the story time. The event will run from 10:00 to 12:00. Thank you for the offer of help, Paulina. I think we can do this with our present staff and with the craft supplies we have on hand. What I could use help with, though, is the flyer for the event. I’d like to be able to publicize the Dia program at the even on April 12th.

Día de los Niños —traditionally held on April 30, but now celebrated throughout the month of April and on other days throughout the year— is a celebration of the importance of reading for children, with special emphasis on the needs of bilingual children. Libraries and schools in hundreds of locations across the country use this event to promote books, reading, and library use in their communities. Each year since 2004, the Riverside County Library System has held Día events featuring appearances by notable authors of children’s books.

The RCLS celebration of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros is coordinated by Leer Es Triunfar (Reading Is Succeeding), a project of the Riverside County Library designed to promote the use of the library by Latino adults, children, and families across Riverside County.
