FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Riverside County Library to Celebrate
Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros
(Day of the Child/Day of the Book)

During April, the Riverside County Library System will present the third annual celebration of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book), a celebration of books, libraries, and reading for children. This year, 22 branches of the Riverside County Library System will offer a variety of programming for children and adults, including author appearances, bilingual story times, crafts, games, and music.  (See attached list of participating libraries and activities.)

Of particular note are a series of appearances by two published authors.  Lulu Delacre, author and illustrator of numerous books for children, including Arroró Mi Niño, Arroz Con Leche, Rafi and Rosi and Salsa Stories, will read from her work at the Desert Hot Springs, La Quinta and Coachella libraries.  "If I were to define my work, I would say that I gravitate to my Latin American roots and relish in being able to use the folklore and traditions of Latinos to inspire my creations. I mostly emphasize what unifies us, rather than what makes us different, since we Latinos share a language, a folklore, and traditions," says Ms. Delacre.

In addition, the celebration will also feature a talk by beloved Mexican-American author, distinguished poet, and spell-binding storyteller Juan Felipe Herrera.  Mr. Herrera has taught poetry from kindergarten to the university level and is the author of numerous poetry and children's books, including Calling The Doves, Upside Down Boy and Laughing Out Loud, I Fly.  Mr. Herrera will read from and talk about his work to the children at the Highgrove Elementary School.

Other Día de los Niños/ Día de los Libros events will also be held at the Valle Vista, Perris, HIghgrove, Robidoux, Nuview, Anza, El Cerrito, San Jacinto, Canyon Lake, Temecula, Lakeside, Thousand Palms, Paloma Valley, Woodcrest, Glen Avon, Cathedral City, Indio, Lake Elsinore, and Palm Desert Libraries.

Día de los Libros—traditionally held on April 30, but now celebrated throughout the month of April and on other days throughout the year— is a celebration of the importance of reading for children, with special emphasis on the needs of bilingual children.  Libraries and schools in hundreds of locations across the country use this event to promote books, reading, and library use in their communities.  Each year since 2004, the Riverside County Library System has held Día events featuring appearances by notable authors of children’s books.

The RCLS celebration of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros is coordinated by Leer Es Triunfar (Reading Is Succeeding), a project of the Riverside County Library designed to promote the use of the library by Latino adults, children, and families across Riverside County.
